EntrepreneurShip Investigates

ESI is a 4-H program designed by the UNL Extension Staff and others throughout the State of Nebraska. ESI is designed to be an exciting, interactive and comprehensive curriculum for youth. The program helps the students develop their entrepreneurial skills and ideas to small businesses for the students to become future business people.

ESI is a program sponsored by TCEDA with the help of the UNL Extension office in Thayer County and other interested business people in the community. We have targeted the Bruning-Davenport, Thayer Central, and Deshler Schools in Thayer County and the Meridian School where the Alexandria students attend. We have offered the class to the 7-12 grade students, this year we met October to March, and had 17 students complete the course. We met once a month for the whole day and discuss topics that help develop business ideas. Those topics were ideas, personalities, strengths, business plans, marketing, what is needed in the area, thinking outside the box, dress for success, working with customers, finances, handling money, leadership, volunteerism, etc. We want the young people to go get an education, come back to live, raise a family, and understand the earning potential here in Thayer County. These students have great ideas and want to be able to further the opportunities in a hometown that believes in them.

The past 2 years we have had a product fair in conjunction with an annual event sponsored by TCEDA. The annual event has had a meal, entertainment and of course socializing with those people you do not see in the winter months. We started the silent auction 2 years ago when we added the product fair to the annual event. This year the silent auction more than doubled in donations and our totals from the silent auction almost tripled what we took in the first year.
