Wind Farm Project A proposed 80 MW wind farm project is expected to cover 10,000 to 15,000 acres along the Monument Road between U.S. Highway 81 and Nebraska Highway 53. Three lines of approximately 40 turbines will stretch across the 8-9 mile path. While local farmer Bob Marsh cleared land of corn not quite ready for harvesting, excavator Gary Hintz set about digging holes for guide wires that anchor a meteorological tower. Project organizer, Gary Aksamit, stood shaking his head in amazement as a once talked about dream was quickly becoming a reality last week. “I’m really excited about this,” he said. “We’ve been talking about this for quite some time.” The “we” Aksamit refers to is the Aeolus Energy LLC and a group of local land owners backing a wind farm Aksamit proposed in 2009. The meteorological tower is the kick-start to the wind project. It will measure the amount of wind present in the area indicating how much electricity can be generated by the wind farm. Data will be collected for a year or more. “We’re in a very desirable situation because the met tower will give us some fall wind data as well as information from our windiest months in the spring,” Aksamit said late last month. Last week at the met tower site, he stressed Thayer County’s viability as a windy enough place to create electricity. “A wind farm will have a direct economic impact on the county, say in the way of a tuition program or compensation to help pay for parks and recreation, things like that,” he said. The $40,000 196-foot met tower, is located four miles east of Highway 81 on the south side of Road Q, or more familiarly Monument Road. The proposed 80MW project will produce an estimated 250,000 MEGAWATTS of electricity every year each of those megawatts will have a green REC (Renewable Energy Certificate), these green REC's are what fossil fuel (coal plants) will need to offset their exposure to this pending EPA legislation. |

Agriculture Improvements Cargill
is moving ahead in expanding its grain-handling capabilities for Thayer
County producers by upgrading several grain storage bins and adding
a truck scale at the former Altra Nebraska LLC ethanol facility in Carleton,
NE. Cargill acquired the rights to the land and grain-handling assets
of the unfinished Altra site in November 2009 to enhance its capabilities
in receiving, weighing, handling and storing local crop producers' deliveries.
The facility, located at 2182 Road 5600, is one-half mile from Cargill's existing Carleton grain complex and will be referred to as the Cargill-Carleton West elevator. Two upright bins being refurbished at the Carleton West site each have a storage capacity of nearly 500,000 bushels, and a flat-storage building adds another 400,000 bushel storage capacity. In addition, Cargill will use two grain dump sites at the facility to help alleviate bottlenecks during high delivery periods. Cargill is exploring options for using other assets acquired as part of the site, with the needs of area producers foremost in mind. Regionally, Cargill AgHorizons-U.S. also operates grain handling facilities in Albion, Lincoln, O'Neil, and Ord, NE, along with Council Bluffs, Iowa. For more information, call 952-742-6910. A major project for AGP Grain in Chester, NE was grain storage expansion, as it added a 1.4 million bushels storage facility, in 2009. Bruning Grain and Feed Co. Inc. just completed building a 520,000 bushel bin bringing their total grain handling capacity to 3.6 million bushels. Incorporated in 1949, Bruning Grain and Feed is an independent elevator located in Southeast Nebraska. Bruning Grain & Feed has a full line of grain products and services including the addition in May 1995 of a soybean processing facility. Using a totally natural mechanical extrusion technique followed by expelling/pressing of oil has given soybeans a new value. In November of 2001, Bruning Grain & Feed added a commodity blending facility to meet customer demand for custom feed mixing. Bruning Grain & Feed strives to provide high quality and high service to our customers throughout the US and Mexico. Please check out Bruning Grain & Feed's products, process, research and prices.
